Local Services Ads: The Google Ad Most Small Business Owners Have Never Heard Of

If you run a service business, plumbing, HVAC, electrical, house cleaning, locksmithing, pest control, you've probably run Google search ads at some point. You picked some keywords, set a budget, and watched clicks come in that didn't always turn into jobs. That's expensive and frustrating, and it's exactly why a different kind of Google ad exists that most small business owners have never heard of: Local Services Ads.
We bring this up because we keep running into owners who assume all Google ads work the same way. They don't. Local Services Ads sit in their own little block, right above the regular search results, and they run on a completely different model than the ads most people are used to.
What makes Local Services Ads different
Regular search ads charge you per click, whether that click turns into a customer or someone just kicking tires. Local Services Ads charge you per lead, so you only pay when someone actually calls or messages you through the ad. That one change in the math matters a lot for a service business working on tight margins.
They also come with something regular search ads don't have: a green checkmark that says "Google Guaranteed" or "Google Screened," plus your star rating and review count, sitting right there before anyone even clicks. You know how at a farmers market some booths have a laminated hand-written sign that says "licensed and inspected"? That's basically what this badge does, except Google puts it at the top of the search results with your reviews already stapled to it.
Who this is actually built for
This format was built with local service trades in mind: plumbers, electricians, HVAC techs, roofers, locksmiths, house cleaners, movers, lawyers, and a growing list of others. When someone in your town searches "emergency plumber near me," a Local Services Ad is often the first thing they see, above both the paid search ads and the map listing.
That matters because most of those searches come from someone who needs help today, not someone doing research for later. We wrote about how to tell if your paid ads are actually working, and the same logic applies here even more. Lead quality matters a lot more than lead volume, especially when you're paying per lead instead of per click.
The catch (there's always one)
Getting approved for Local Services Ads isn't as simple as picking a budget and hitting go. Google runs a background check on your business and, depending on your trade, verifies your license and insurance. It takes some paperwork and some patience, and that step alone is probably why this format stays so under-the-radar. The businesses that push through the screening tend to face a lot less competition than they would in regular search ads.
What a lead actually costs, and what happens with a dud
Pricing varies by trade and by area, and Google sets it based on how competitive your local market is. What's worth knowing upfront is that you can dispute leads that are clearly spam, wrong numbers, or from someone way outside your service area, and get credited back for them. Skipping that step means quietly paying full price for junk leads every month without noticing.
How this fits with the rest of your marketing
Local Services Ads work best next to everything else you're already doing, not instead of it. Reviews matter more here than almost anywhere else, since your rating shows up right in the ad itself. A business with three reviews and a business with eighty reviews aren't competing on a level playing field, even with identical bids.
If you haven't looked at our post comparing Google Ads and Facebook Ads, it's worth reading to see where Local Services Ads fit next to those two, since all three are solving a different problem. We handle paid ad management for clients across all three formats, because search, social, and Local Services tend to catch people at different moments. Someone might see your Facebook ad in March, forget about you completely, and then find you again through a Local Services Ad in July when their water heater finally gives out.
Bottom line
If you're in a local service trade and you've never looked at Local Services Ads, it's worth ten minutes to check whether your business even qualifies. It won't replace everything else in your marketing, but for a plumber, electrician, or cleaning company, it can end up being the highest-intent, lowest-waste ad dollar you spend all month.
